10 November 2015, Puerto Princesa City – Palawan Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Officers from northern and southern municipalities and PCSD Staff participated in a 1-day orientation-training on Weather 101 and Tropical Cyclone 101 at the PCSDS Office this City.
The basic training will help the participants to develop awareness and capacity building, understand the concepts, processes and effects of weather disturbances and rain-producing weather systems in the Philippines. This weather knowledge will be used in creating appropriate actions plans and in making decisions to reduce the impacts in time of disasters.
In preparation for setting-up automatic weather stations (AWS) in all municipalities of Palawan, a memorandum of agreement will be forged between the Pilipinas Shell Foundation Inc. (PSFI), PCSDS and the Weather Philippines.
This platform of cooperation will define respective roles in implementing the program for Palawan. PSFI will handle the funding and training, Weather Philippines for the resource training, technical, maintenance, security and data logging, while the PCSDS with Palawan PDRRMC will handle the overall coordination.
The Weather Philippines Foundation (WPF) envisions being the country’s premiere private weather information/content provider with Aboitiz Group for resources and network, and Meteo Group for the technical expertise. WPF plans to install roughly 1,000 automated weather stations/devices across the Philippines of which, out of the figure, Palawan will have 28 AWSs.
