Rationale
The UN-Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were put in place after the success of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to attain a more universal and more inclusive outcome. The SDGs, composed of 17 goals and 169 specific targets, envision an improved quality of life of all nations through sustainable development involving all sectors.
Guiding the people in combating the contemporary issues and preparing for the future, monitoring the attainment of the SDGs is important to keep track of the world’s milestones. Being the first ever agreement between all nations targeting a common objective, success stories and progress reports can further influence other nations to push thru and continue amidst the changing environment.
The Palawan Council for Sustainable Development in collaboration with partner government agencies, academic institutions, and non-government organizations through the Palawan Knowledge Platform has been hosting the annual Palawan Research Symposium and National Conference on Sustainable Development since 2014. The 2019 International Conference on Biosphere and Sustainability aims to pool experts, researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders to witness the exchange of researches and project reports in the Philippines and all over the world. It aims to highlight the policy implications of scientific findings on the attainment of SDGs as well as to provide information on learnings and best practices. It will also feature researches, studies and learnings conducted in biosphere reserves, the learning laboratories for sustainable development.
The 2019 International Conference on Biosphere and Sustainability shall be an important international conference to be held in the province of Palawan that convenes relevant researches and researchers under various themes encompassing the issues and challenges in the biosphere reserves and sustainable development. It will bring an excellent experience of lectures from distinguished experts from different regions of the world, global networking, Filipino hospitality and culture in the best island in the world and a UNESCO designated biosphere reserve, Palawan in the Philippines.
Objectives
- To promote information exchange among UNESCO-designated biosphere reserves;
- and
- To provide a venue for cross pollination of expertise from various learnings at the global scale and catalyze transnational partnerships in promoting sustainable development.
