To raise awareness on the importance of wetlands and spur conservation and protection efforts towards it, the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD) Staff District Management Division (DMD)-North took part in the world-wide celebration of the World Wetlands Day, February 2.

As a corollary event, a Mangrove tree-planting activity was conducted in So. Bunuangin, Port Barton, San Vicente, Palawan, in collaboration with PCSD, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), local government of San Vicente, Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), and partner-agencies.

With the theme: “It’s Time for Wetlands Restoration,” the World Wetlands Day is an annual celebration which began in 1971.

The PCSDS DMD-North also discussed in the event the dynamics and importance of Environmentally Critical Areas Network (ECAN) Zoning, and the role which the Mangrove ecosystem plays in the world.

To date, 35% of the world’s wetlands have already disappeared because of changing climate and exploitative human activities, which deteriorates the world’s biosphere.

It was joined by both the public and private sectors.
