The PCSDS-ECAN Monitoring and Evaluation Division (EMED) and District Management Division(DMD)-North attended the meeting of the Governing Board of the Bacuit-El Nido Bay Water Quality Management Area (BENB WQMA) on December 5, 2022, via Zoom.
Hosted by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources- Environment Management Bureau (EMB)-MIMAROPA, the meeting was attended by different government and non-government agencies/institutions. It focused on the review of the Governing Rules of the BENB WQMA, special meeting with the El Nido Sewerage and Solid Waste Treatment Plant, and presentation of the latest water quality status of Bacuit-El Nido Bay.
PCSDS provided comments and suggestions during the review of the Governing Rules of BENB WQM.
The 2022 results of water quality monitoring of Bacuit-El Nido Bay, including Corong-corong, showed that the failed to meet the water quality guidelines; fecal coliform specifically in the 5 outfalls from Corong-corong, El Nido Estero/Buena Suerte, and Cabugao/Masagana (all in Poblacion), exceeded the standards. The DENR-EMB mentioned that the pollution issue of BENB will now be addressed by DENR-Central, considering the EMB Regional Director has already personally presented these results to the El Nido LGU.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), meanwhile, reported about the oil spill incident report that happened on June 21, 2022 along Bacuit Bay, which was posted on social media platform by a concerned citizen. An investigation conducted by PCG on the alleged oil spill/slick, however, yielded a negative result. The representative of El Nido Chamber of Commerce & Industry suggested that the PCG should implement a strict monitoring and implementation with regards to the oil discharge of the motor bancas by checking their logbooks.
