Delegates from the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development Staff (PCSDS) are currently participating in the Joint Philippines-Vietnam Marine Scientific Research Masterclass at the University of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Mr. Mark Ace Dela Cruz of the ECAN Zones Management and Enforcement Division (EZMED) and Mr. Jesus Bream of the ECAN Monitoring and Evaluation Division (EMED) joined the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA), Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Center (NAVMETOC), and Department of Foreign Affairs – Maritime and Ocean Affairs Office (DFA-MOAO) delegates from the Philippines. The event is part of the Marine Resources Initiative (MRI) Project in partnership with Geoscience Australia and the University of Sydney with fund support from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade – Australia.
The week-long program brings together emerging marine scientists and experts to explore cutting-edge topics in oceanography and earth sciences. Key discussions include the origins of the Earth and Moon, the formation of the first oceans, and plate tectonic theory-critical to understanding the Earth’s dynamic structure.
Participants also engage with advanced technologies used in ocean research, explore seafloor-mapping techniques, and delve into the principles of physical oceanography, focusing on waves, tides, and the global ocean conveyor system. Additional sessions cover sediment transport and the ecological roles of estuaries.
The masterclass aims to strengthen regional capacity for sustainable marine-resource management and foster international collaboration in marine science.
