The Palawan Council for Sustainable Development, (PCSD), through its Chair Governor Victorino Dennis M. Socrates, received the ReefScan and ReefCloud equipment from the Australian Government through the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) during the Project Equipment Hand-Over Ceremony today September 12 at the Best Western Plus Ivywall Hotel, Puerto Princesa City.

ReefScan Transom is an autonomous device that can be mounted to a vessel to acquire underwater images while the vessel is in motion and sends these pictures to ReefCloud for analysis. ReefCloud, on the other hand,is a digital platform that analyzes underwater photos of coral reefs using artificial intelligence (AI) and quickly extracts information about the reef’s condition in order to generate comprehensive, standardized, and understandable reports.

Gov. Socrates expressed his gratitude towards the Australian Government, AIMS, and the Marine Resource Initiative (MRI) for the introduction of these technologies to the PCSD. The equipment will be very helpful and useful in the management of coral reef ecosystems in Palawan. The data collected from these technologies will be used to generate the ECAN coastal maps of the province.
