In celebration of Zero Waste Management Month, the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development Staff (PCSDS) District Management Division (DMD)-North participated in clean-up drives held in Poblacion, Taytay, on January 21.
Participated by 500 representatives from both private and public sectors, the clean-up drives provided an opportunity for the participants to learn about the nature of plastics while collecting waste-products flanking the coastal areas of Northern Palawan, emphasizing the essence of Philippine coasts in the over-all marine ecosystem and food security.
500 Kg of plastic waste was mostly collected.
Mr. Edilberto Magpayo, Project Manager of Turismo at Negosyo Dulot ng Ingat Kalikasan (TANDIKAN), also conducted lectures on plastic pollution and its impact globally during the event.
He emphasized to the participants the importance of compliance with environmental laws and policies, and also adhering to 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle in dealing with Single-Use Plastics (SUPs).
With the theme, “Stepping Up Solid Waste Management Through Efficient Extended Producers’ Responsibility,” the National Zero Waste Month is an advocacy campaign promoting a “circular economy” in the production and use of consumer products to reduce the volume and toxicity of generated wastes, which began in 2014 through Presidential Proclamation No. 760.
