PALAWAN KNOWLEDGE PLATFORM, SET

by | Dec 15, 2014

The Palawan Council for Sustainable Development aims to harness new technologies and utilize the world of cyber space to let the people of Palawan and the world know the abundant treasures the province has when it comes to biodiversity. Thus, an interactive information hub, the Palawan Knowledge Platform, was launched last December 11, 2014. It is a gateway for sharing knowledge and information of Palawan’s biological diversity and natural heritage.

This knowledge platform will provide avenues for PCSD’s partners from the National government, academe, and non-government organizations in disseminating their studies, researches, programs, and projects concerning the last frontier’s terrestrial and coastal-marine resources ranging from species of flora and fauna, protected or conservation areas, indigenous peoples and many more. This data-mine of information will serve as a tool for better protection and utilization of these resources.

Just like with the Philippine Clearing House Mechanism, to which the PCSD is affiliated and networked with, this web-based information sharing mechanism will be supporting our country’s commitment to the international community through sharing of biodiversity information as mandated in the United Nations Convention on Biodiversity. PCSD has expanded this by sharing knowledge and information on Sustainable Development, which is the ultimate goal of the Strategic Environmental Plan for Palawan or Republic Act 7611.

The PCSD Chairman and Governor of Palawan, Jose C. Alvarez, said, “People deserve to know this island at this period of our nation’s history. They ought to know more than what their eyes can see, what their ears will hear. They must sufficiently know what treasures Palawan still hold today in the deepest forests, in its velvety mountains and coralline blue seas, and what socio-economic changes will impact their lives more.”

Aside from the launching of the knowledge platform, a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed by PCSD’s PKP partner agencies. The pioneering member-agencies of this partnership are: the Provincial Government of Palawan, City Government of Puerto Princesa, Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Palawan, Department of Agriculture – Palawan, Department of Agrarian Reform, Department of Science and Technology – Palawan, Conservation International Philippines, World Wildlife Fund for Nature, Tubbataha Management Office, Katala Foundation, Palawan NGO Network, Holy Trinity University, Palawan State University, and Western Philippines University.

The Palawan Knowledge Platform is technically assisted by the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity and the Philippine Clearing House Mechanism.
