4th National Conference on Sustainable Development & 5th Palawan Research Symposium

With the theme, “Sustaining the Future: The Hindsight, Insight and Foresight of Research and Innovations” the 4th National Conference on Sustainable Development & 5th Palawan Research Symposium shall be held on the 26th to 27th of July 2018 at the City State Asturias Hotel, Puerto Princesa City.

 

The symposium, which started in 2013, is a strategy of the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development Staff and its partners in the Palawan Knowledge Platform for Biodiversity and Sustainable Development to communicate relevant researches that contributes to the attainment of Palawan’s sustainable development in line with the Strategic Environmental Plan (SEP) for Palawan Act (RA 7611).

 

The event aims to present and showcase sustainable development researches, projects and programs undertaken around the country; and to assess their policy implications to national and global actions towards the New Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations or the UN Agenda 2030.

 

The 4th National Conference on Sustainable Development and 5th Palawan Research Symposium targets a wider scope of knowledge and diverse partakers. An avenue for researchers, students and professionals alike, to present their respective and findings to a wider environmentally inclined audience, this event can also serve as a learning ground for local policy makers of the different government units in the country.

 

For this year there will be two (2) categories: Oral Presentation (competing and non-competing) and Poster Presentation. The categories are further grouped into different thematic sessions:

 

  • Biophysical, Ecological and Climate Change;
  • Socio-cultural, Legal, Institutional and Political; and
  • Economic and Technological (including Energy, Infrastructure, Information and Communication).

 

It is expected that there will be more than 70 participants for the Oral Presentation (competing and non-competing) and around 30 participants for the Poster Presentations.

 

Presenters will be coming from Palawan, Puerto Princesa, Benguet, Davao, Manila, Laguna to name a few.

Different Local Government Units from around the country are also expected to participate.

 

The conference and symposium will also hold a plenary session on Day 1 (July 26, 2018) with different resource speakers, to wit:

 

  • Secretary Fortunato T. Dela Peña, Department of Science and Technology;
  • Undersecretary Rodolfo C. Garcia, Department of Environment and Natural Resources;
  • Dr. Dai Yeun Jeong, Executive Director, Asia Climate Change Education Center (ACCEC);
  • Dr. Angel C. Alcala, National Scientist NAST and Chair, SUACKREM;
  • Dr. Jurgenne H. Primavera, Zoological Society of London (Day 2); and
  • Dr. Neil Aldrin D. Mallari, Philippine Center for Conservation Innovations Inc. (Day 2)

 

On Day 2 (July 27, 2018), a panel discussion on the topic of “Research, Technology and Innovations: Vehicles for the Attainment of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (Agenda 2030)” will be presented by Dr. Vicente B. Tuddao, DENR Assistant Regional Director, MIMAROPA. The panel will be composed of:

 

  • Dr. Dai Yeun Jeong, Executive Director, ACCEC;
  • Dr. Elsa P. Manarpaac, President, Western Philippine University;
  • Dr. Ramon M. Docto, President, Palawan State University;
  • Pres. Aileen A. Alterado, President, Palawan Polytechnic College, Inc.;
  • Department of Science and Technology; and
  • Palawan Chamber of Commerce.

 

The keynote speech shall be given by the Honorable Cynthia Villar, Senator, Republic of the Philippines on Day 1.

 

The event shall also be the venue for the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD) and the Asia Climate Change Education Center (ACCEC) of South Korea, for jointly implementing different programs related to the agenda on sustainable development.

 

The 4th National Conference on Sustainable Development & 5th Palawan Research Symposium is an initiative of the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development together with its partners the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Asia Climate Change Education Center, Holy Trinity University, Palawan State University, Western Philippine University, Palawan Polytechnic College Inc., and the City Government of Puerto Princesa.
