Fifty adult-sized freshwater turtles were released back into the wild somewhere in northern part of Puerto Princesa City on March 2.
30 Southeast Asian Box Turtles, 10 Asian Leaf Turtles, and 10 Palawan Forest Turtles were freed after having certified to be in good condition by the City Veterinarian Office. These turtles, either turned over or confiscated in 2016, underwent treatment while in custody at the Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center (PWRCC).
The operation was done by the personnel from the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development Staff (PCSDS), PWRCC and Katala Foundation Inc.
In the PCSD’s 2014 Updated List of Terrestrial and Marine Wildlife, Palawan Southeast Asian Box is listed as endangered, while Palawan Forest Turtle is listed as critically endangered.
