To ensure that the management of Coral Bay Nickel Corporation (CBNC) adheres to and implements sustainable, safe, and responsible practices and standards set by the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), and responds to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development Staff (PCSDS) through the ECAN Monitoring and Evaluation Division (EMED) conducted a sustainability assessment using Sustainable Management Monitoring Tool (SMOT) at the CBNC mining site in Rio Tuba, Bataraza, Palawan; August 29- September 2.

The SMOT, anchored on the 10 principles set by the ICMM, was developed by the Manicougan-Uapishka Biosphere Reserve of Canada. It comprises 46 objectives (indicators) spanning the four dimensions of sustainable development: economic, social, environmental, and governance, and aligns with the 17 UN SDGs. It was adopted by PCSDS in 2017 as a sustainability monitoring tool, ensuring the balanced performance of operating mining companies in Palawan across the four dimensions of sustainable development.

After evaluating the performance of CBNC using the SMOT indicators, the company achieved a โ€œproactiveโ€ overall rating. This performance demonstrates that the company operation is responsive to the sustainable development of both the ICMM and the UNSDG, as it also complements the goals of Republic Act No. 7611, the Strategic Environmental Plan (SEP) for Palawan Act.

While CBNC demonstrates a proactive approach to sustainability, there remain areas for improvement. PCSDS has identified several opportunities for the company to further elevate its sustainable practices, including but not limited to, collaborating with local academic institutions and leveraging company scholars for research, and addressing potential environmental challenges, among others.

Meanwhile, on August 31, the PCSD (Council) institutionalized the use of SMOT for mining companies in Palawan through PCSD Resolution No. 23-937. As an additional condition for their SEP clearance, all incoming and operating mining companies in Palawan must conduct annual sustainability monitoring with PCSDS using this tool. #PCSDNews#pcsdupdates

Upang siguraduhing tumatalima at ipinatutupad ng Coral Bay Nickel Corporation (CBNC) ang tuloy-tuloy, ligtas, at responsableng pagmimina na alinsunod sa mga panuntunan ng International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), at ng United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), nagsagawa ang Palawan Council for Sustainable Development Staff (PCSDS) ECAN Monitoring and Evaluation Division (EMED) ng โ€œsustainability assessmentโ€ gamit ang Sustainable Management Tool (SMOT), na isinagawa sa CBNC mining site sa Rio Tuba, Bataraza, Palawan; ika-29 ng Agosto hanggang ika-2 ng Setyembre.
