For Palawan, ECAN Zoning is used to regulate the type of activities and developments allowed in a given area in a way that will best promote environmental conservation, biodiversity and overall sustainability in Palawan, dividing areas from the tip of the mountains to the lowlands and the coastal areas into core, buffer and multiple use zones.

Additionally, ECAN Zoning demonstrates social inclusiveness by incorporating special zoning designation known as the TAZ (Tribal Ancestral Zones) to protect and preserve tribal ancestral lands.
